Mother Blessing

The modern baby shower is great for setting you up with lots of diapers and onesies but they don’t really address the amazing rite of passage that is also occurring: a mother is about to be born (and she is going to work her butt off to get there.) Mother Blessings celebrate, honor and bolster the mom-to-be, as she prepares for the intense and amazing journey of birth. In a Mother Blessing, we share our blessings with the mom-to-be, we love her up and nurture her, we gather in a sacred circle of women, we call upon our lineage and all the women that have crossed this threshold before us. Mother Blessings bring your community together in a sacred way. Food and libations may be shared, but most importantly, wisdom, courage, and good juju are shared.

For a Mother Blessing, I can help facilitate the ceremony, or I can guide one of your close friends/family members to this for you. Thinking about who you are, how you are choosing to birth, and what is most important to you, we create rituals and sharing moments that feel most supportive and relevant you. This ceremony really is all about you, and the rite of passage that is birth… The Mother Blessing creates a potent field of love and support around you, so that you feel fully held as you undertake the courageous and expansive journey of birthing your baby.

Many moons ago, when I had my own Mother Blessing under a red tent, a necklace was created for me. This has become a common element in a Mother Blessing, where each woman present comes with a bead. She places the bead on a string with a blessing to go along with it. I ended up with a beautiful, long strand of beads, and I used it copiously during my long early labor as prayer beads. To take my mind of the contractions, I went through the necklace, bead by bead, remembering who had given me each beautiful bauble, and remembering their blessings. Throughout my labor, I felt present to my supportive community, and was bolstered by their love.

Please contact me if you would like to talk about your own Mother Blessing, or holding one for a friend.
